Empty Child/The Doctor Dances – apparently this is the cliche answer, but this was the first nuWho story I saw, and it got me into the concept again. Outside of that story I really like ‘Dalek’. That ep gives a good, early view on the New Doctor and his view of the Time War. Also Daleks are inversely scarier when the stakes are lower. The more Daleks, the less threatening they seem.
Midnight. This bottle episode with a super creepy monster is a good bit of psychological horror. I’m not Tennant fan that many others are so I don’t tend to rewatch his run all that much.
My favorite of the nuWho Doctors also has the best introduction of a Doctor ever in ‘The Eleventh Hour’. Smith emerges almost fully formed as ‘his’ Doctor. Meeting young Amy, then old, Prisoner Zero, a few hints about Rory, then that awesome wardrobe scene leading up to 11 confronting the Atraxi, sums up all anyone would ever need to know about the show. If I were going to show someone one episode to encapsulate Doctor Who it would be this one. It reads almost like a pilot episode of a new show, and it really works. One of my favorite single episodes of TV period.
had a very rough start with some terrible scripts, but this most recent series has been much better. With Clara out of the picture, I’m really hoping we get a new direction for Capaldi’s Doctor. If it weren’t for his compelling performances lifting some really questionable scripts to watchability, I might have followed Larry in bailing on the show. ‘Heaven Sent,’ the second to last episode this season was absolutely amazing though. There was enough good this season to bring me back, and actually anticipating the next series. I do think Moffat might have done all he can do, and a new vision might be in order.
If heaven sent was the ep straight after Clara died then I agree with you. Best capaldi episode hands down. You “dalek abundance inverse to fear” ratio is spot on – well put!
